Pulmonary hypertension is a rare complication of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It represents one of the prognostic factors that determine survival in these patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of pulmonary hypertension in patients with ESRD. We reviewed the charts of 70 patients with ESRD and pulmonary hypertension diagnosed between 1992 and 2003. The mean age of the patients was 49.7 +/- 14.8 years (range 18-78 years). A history of anemia was present in 62 (89%) patients, and serum ferritin levels were lower than 300 ng/mL in 47 (67.2%). The etiology of the renal disease was mainly glomerular disease (58.6%). Forty-five (64%) patients were on dialysis at the time of the diagnosis, and only 14 (20%) had a functioning kidney graft. Only 4 (5.7%) patients had a recent history of congestive heart failure. All patients had systemic hypertension.
