How AutoCAD Works

AutoCAD is similar to other CAD packages in that it provides a library of tools and templates which can be used to model and draw drawings. The software is operated by the user, who can manipulate objects, create drawings, and use the library of predesigned objects. The main window, or “canvas,” contains a workspace on which the user can draw and place the objects. The items that the user creates are stored in the working area, as well as in a library. Any changes the user makes to the object or workspace are automatically saved in the library. When the user closes the program, all of the drawings, whether still in the workspace or in the library, are saved.

In AutoCAD, the user can create a drawing by placing objects on the canvas. The objects that are placed appear in the drawing. The objects can be modified by the user, but the changes remain stored in the drawing. When the user finishes creating a drawing, she can save it by choosing File>Save or File>Save as. In most cases, this is the only way to save a drawing. The user can also save a drawing directly from the drawing window by choosing File>Save As. The user can then choose a name for the drawing and a location where it will be saved.

Step 1: Create a new drawing by choosing Insert>New. Type the new drawing’s name in the Name box, and click the OK button.

Step 2: Click on the canvas, and drag it to size. The new drawing will fill the space available.

Step 3: Click on the View tab, and make sure your view is 2D Wireframe.

Step 4: Click on the Model tab. The Select Model window appears, where you can select the objects that will be included in the drawing. Click on the Model drop-down list and select Model Components or Model Construction.

Step 5: Add a new object by clicking on the Create tab. Select the type of object you want, and then click on the object.

Step 6: Type a new name in the Name box, and drag the object into the drawing.

Step 7: Select the object by clicking on it, and then press the Delete key to remove it from the drawing.

Step 8: Select all of the objects in the drawing. To do this, click on the Select Objects button on the top

Integration with other applications
AutoCAD LT is able to integrate with other applications such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for editing and viewing DXF files.

The AutoCAD suite supports other applications and operating systems.

AutoCAD has the ability to integrate with other CAD packages, such as Bentley MicroStation.

AutoCAD can display three types of data: lines, curves and text. Line types include hatch, dashed, dotted, dashed dotted, solid, dotted, dashed dot, solid dot, dashed dot dot, solid dot dot, and no line. A continuous series of lines is called a contour. Lines can be combined and the lines are hidden or visible at run time. Contours can be viewed in any plane.

Curves are lines connected with control points. Curves can be split, extruded, or twisted. Line control points are the same as control points for curves. The length, direction, and other properties of a curve are specified using a system of coordinates and associated parameter values.

Text is a single continuous line of characters that can be split, rotated, or curved. Text and properties can be stored in a drawing. Properties include placement, direction, weight, font, alignment, and a variety of other controls. Text can be exported from a drawing for printing.

Drawings can be displayed in several ways:
Visually with default settings on a display device such as a monitor or printer
Visually with the drawing’s default settings, but without the color model (B/W only)
With the color model displayed (True color)
With a color model displayed (True color) and annotations (objects and text)
With a color model displayed (True color) and annotations (objects and text) and transparency
In a modeless display that shows the drawing as a series of annotated images that can be manipulated individually

Annotations are special properties or objects that are not in the drawing and are separate from the drawing entities. Annotations provide simple descriptions for the drawing. Annotations can be displayed as lines, text, dimension style, or other objects such as symbols, hatch patterns, symbols, and contour lines. Annotations can be stored in a drawing and can be dragged and dropped into the drawing. They can also be dropped into the drawing from a database, a spreadsheet, or other program. They can be edited as an object. They can be moved, scaled, rotated, and skewed. They can
